F$U Program Description

Financial $urvival University (F$U) program activities consist of educational training and seminars, to low to moderate income individuals in the area of financial literacy and money management principles. F$U will offer two components. The first component will use Mind Your Finances from the InCharge Education Foundation and will focus on adults/parents. The second component will use the National Endowment for Financial Education High School Financial Planning curriculum where the focus is on youth/students. This program allows F$U to provide financial literacy training to school age young adults in a way that is relevant to their age group and needs. Teaching financial literacy to youth will help to break the cycle of poverty and change the destiny for generations. Each of the programs used offer material in English and Spanish, which will allow F$U to provide financial literacy training to a growing population of the community that is non-English speaking.

Scope of Training

Adults

Trainings are held for the targeted population for 2(two) hours on a weekly basis for a period of 10 weeks for a total of 20 training hours per program. F$U is modeled after the university/learning institution format therefore program will offer participants the opportunity to continue learning after the basics have been comprehended so that they can sustain change and go on to financial independence in every area of their lives. (Class can also be offered in a 5 week format)

The program consists of ten workbooks. Each workbook covers a specific topic and provides the basics necessary to understand that topic. The first three workbooks provide the foundation for each person's understanding of how to manage his or her finances. The remaining seven workbooks focus on specific financial topics that participants will need to understand how to make effective decisions.

Students/Youth High School Financial Planning Program (HSFPP)

The HSFPP curriculum consists of seven units that will be taught in 2(two) hour increments for 7 weeks for a total of 14 training hours per program. Trainings are held for the targeted population through programs initiated in collaboration with school districts and community learning centers. Program materials provide a basic introduction to personal financial planning, covering the impact of career and work factors on earnings potential, spending and saving money, using and managing credit effectively, protecting assets, and the time value of money. Students also are taught how to develop their own personal spending and savings plan.

Budgeting-101

Budgeting- is a 3 hour intensive hands on course that will help you create a spending plan for your income and expenses.   Having a monthly spending plan will help you achieve your long-term financial goals.    This course is a prerequisite for all of the additional courses available through F$U (Financial $urvival University).    Class requirement:  Commitment to change and a calculator.

The innovative course uses contemporary materials to teach the basics of personal finance to young people while they are developing habits and attitudes about money that will influence them for the rest of their lives.
